Avro Canada, Lippisch, Shenstone, Frost and a Disc-Flight Story

A ruse of feints were applied to the rocket, all-wing and disc technologies that arrived in America from the summer of 1945 onwards. Without delving into conspiracy theory, the nature and course of the story can be easily framed.

Fascinated by the possibilities of the rocket science, all-wing, and flying disc technology, forensic study of German machinery took place at Wright Field (now Wright-Patterson AFB). There, from Hangar 18 and beyond, a whole series of experts and academics were gathered to assess the German technology, and the German scientists themselves. A familiar name, Beverley Shenstone, was a Wright Field regular from 1941–1945, his fluent technical German and friendship with Alexander Lippisch and Junkers luminaries being just the tip of that particular iceberg.

Soon after the gathering of the technology and the technologists in 1945, there manifested the great ‘UFO’ mass psy-ops game where a false trail was laid by the authorities in order to conceal their examination and flight testing of all-wing and disc-technology airframes. Thus began Project Grudge and then Project Bluebook. The infamous Roswell ‘UFO’ event can rationally be framed as nothing less and nothing more likely than the flight testing of Horten Ho 9/Ho 229 derived designs amid the relevance of delta-wings, parabolas, discs and boundary layer controlled devices. Little green men from planet alien are unlikely to be the cause of the Roswell affair – or ‘incident’ as it is best described.

A longer term ruse was the setting up of publicly acknowledged scientific experiments to design and build disc-shaped craft. The British A.V. Roe (Avro) company would soon be busy creating Lippisch inspired delta-winged prototypes that led to the mighty ‘Vulcan’ delta-wing bomber, but Avro (Canada), which was a large and successful Canadian company, was soon to be associated with the flying disc ‘Silverbug’ and ‘Avrocar’ programmes. Were these a double-edged device to publicly demonstrate a PR-friendly face of the new heat of technology, or a cover for something more? Such devices could hardly ‘fly’ and should not be held up as UFO ‘cover-ups’ by theorists. Indeed, the Avro machines were unsuccessful and no amount of UFO hype can change that fact.

Obscured behind the ‘Avrocar’ and ‘Silverbug’ experimental devices, lay the real work – the true advance in Coanda-effect disc airframe design and anti-gravity work that stemmed directly from what had gone on in the forests of Bohemia under Nazi control from 1938 to 1945.

The names of Schauberger, von Braun, Miethe, Klein, Schreiver and others, are often cited in stories of advanced technology and many claims and counter claims exist. Confabulation and fantasy are not unknown within the tale, and the story is now occluded by hype, theory and deceit. What we can say with certainty is that a very large amount of money was poured into flying-disc research by Germany and then by the Americans via Avro of Canada from 1946 onwards.
